Here are the original stated parameters of this project.
"THE FUNDAMENTALS: Two, and only two, tracks with one instrument only per track--no overdubs. Vocals are considered an instrument. Using multi-instrument software like REASON is acceptable if only one instrument is used (or the entire song consists of a maximum of two REASON instruments.) An instrument may have unlimited effects applied but they cannot be overdubbed. I'm going to draw the line on samplers as well. Since they possess no musical attributes of their own, their sound must initially be generated by another source. Therefore samplers, as with REASON, may use only one sampled sound (no keyboard splits) although that sound can be made up of unlimited merged sources into a single patch.
EXAMPLE: On a guitar plus vocal song,an additional guitar CANNOT be used on that track when the vocals are not being sung. Each track is reserved for use by a single instrument. If there is a passage where the guitar plays a lead solo, you must relinquish the rhythm guitar unless you're capable of playing the lead and rhythm simultaneously. While this may seem very limiting initially, Dynamic Duo is wide open as far as genre is concerned. There are no boundaries regarding style or implementation. A song could be as traditional as a guitar and vocal combo or as esoteric as the sound of a Pug snoring accompanied by pan flute. I encourage each of you to transcend your personal musical boundaries. I also entreat you to begin ASAP because even simple music can become the very time-consuming.
• • • CRACKER JACK: There is one optional wild card. Each song can have one 11 second (or less) interlude in which one additional instrument/track can be added to the mix. This 11 second (or less) comp must be contiguous and cannot be broken up for use throughout the song. Use of this Cracker Jack in not required.
The world is a musical place—a mockingbird's mournful twitter, a chorus of laughing children at play, the wind blowing through your neighbors huge eucalyptus tree. Sometimes the simplest sounds can be the most evocative. I wish each of you success with this project. I hope these guidelines inspire you to great personal achievement and aid you in confronting and overcoming any musical insecurities. Most of all I hope you learn something about yourself and your talent that you hadn't known previously."
